私が紅茶の世界に入ったのは、思いがけない出会いからでした。

1990年初期ごに京都でスリランカの方との予期せぬ出会いから始まりました。当時日本を訪れる外国人の中、スリランカ人が珍しく、話しかけてみましたら、スリランカのヌワラエリア市の市長と市議会議員でした。

詳しく話を聞くと京都府宇治市と姉妹提携しているヌワラエリア市を宇治市による招待され、初めて日本に来ましたが、当時特に英語まほとんど通じない日本で、又次の日宇治市役所でのヌワラエリア-宇治市の交流会議に出席にあたって言葉の壁にぶつかっていました。そこで、私は宇治ーヌワラエリア両市の友好交流会のボランティア通訳をしました。

この運命的な出会いを通じて、私は宇治市とヌワラエリヤ市の国際的に認められた高品質な茶産地としての共通の評判を通じて結ばれていることを深めに理解しました。

よく考えたら1990年初期ごろだったので、紅茶について日本では一般住民の間に全く知られていなく、すべての国民ともも言える皆様方「自宅や会社でほとんお茶とコーヒー」だった。私が初めて日本に到着した1980年代初頭には、飲料として自動販売機でもコーヒーがあってもお茶も紅茶もありませんでした。今の時代は本当に変わりましたね！

当時まだ知られていなかったスリランカの文化を日本に紹介したかったのため、宇治での友好交流を中心の活動としてセイロン紅茶を中心した事業として「有限会社セーロン」を設立しました。

自分にとって大きな分かれ道がめのまえにえあり、「当時ブーム真っ最中だった半導体技術サラリーマンからお茶の街で紅茶の店を開くにあたって多くの方の大反対と不安材料でした。でもこのような環境の中で、大阪で紅茶の店「ムジカ」のとこが私の耳に入ってきた。私にとって「ムジカ」は遠くに見える小さな星でした。

そこで早速ムジカへ足を運びました。

ムジカで飲んだ紅茶もとても美しく、懐かしかった。

ムジカ社長から色々ご指導、アドバイス又彼の歩みを聞かせていただきました。

それから当時紅茶の販売するのもパッキングやそのルールも全くわからないまま進む事の危険もムジカ社長が取り外してくれました。必要情報をほとんど教えてくれました。

真っ暗闇の中出発する私にとって「ムジカ」は朗読でした。

ムジカ創業者はじめ同業スタッフの皆様に感謝申し上げます。

その原動力で宇治でまずスリランカと日本の友好活動を広める噴水の一滴になれた事に喜びと感謝申し上げたい。

当時宇治市長だった「橋本市長や久保田市長」宇治市民の皆様の思い、ご協力、ご指導中、当交流活動を「文化、教育、経済とスポーツ等」で広げることが出来感謝申し上げます。

私ども（TEAKYO）の紅茶を通じて、セイロン紅茶が育んできた長い歴史と豊かな文化をお楽しみいただくとともに、日本や世界との豊かなつながりも感じていただけますと幸いに存じます。

My journey into the world of tea was by an unexpected meeting when I met some people from Sri Lanka in Kyoto in the early 90’s. At the time, it was still rare to see other foreigners in Japan, let alone other Sri Lankans, and I was surprised to discover I was meeting the mayor and city council members of Nuwara Eliya City in Sri Lanka.

They were invited by Uji City to attend a city sister exchange meeting and I volunteered as their interpreter. Through this fateful meeting, I discovered the connection between the cities of Uji and Nuwara Eliya through their shared reputation as internationally recognized, high-quality tea-producing regions. Thinking back, in the early 1990s, black tea was virtually unknown among Japanese citizens; practically everyone, you could say, drank mostly green tea or coffee at home or work. In the early 80’s, when I first arrived in Japan, even in vending machines, while coffee was available, neither green tea nor black tea was sold. How times have changed today! I wanted to introduce Sri Lankan culture to Japan, which, at the time, was unheard of. I decided to focus my activities on friendly exchanges in Uji and established “Ceylon Pvt Ltd.” centered around Ceylon tea.

A major crossroads lay before me. Leaving my job in the then-booming semiconductor industry to open a tea shop in the tea district faced strong opposition and concerns from many. But, in this environment, I heard about Muzica, a black tea shop in Osaka. For me, Musica was like a small star visible in the distance.

I immediately went to visit Musica. The tea I drank there was incredibly delicious, beautiful, and nostalgic.

The president of Musica gave me guidance and various pieces of advice, and shared his own journey with me. Furthermore, Musica's president removed the risks of proceeding without knowing anything about tea sales, packaging, or the rules at the time. He taught me almost all the necessary information I needed to pursue this vision.

For me, setting out in complete darkness, Musica was a guiding light.

I express my gratitude to Musica, its founder, and all the fellow staff members.

Driven by that momentum, I am filled with joy and gratitude to have become a single drop in the fountain, helping to spread Sri Lankan-Japanese friendship activities in Uji.

Later, with the thoughts, cooperation, and guidance of the citizens of Uji, including the mayors at the time, Mayor Hashimoto and Mayor Kubota, I was able to expand these exchange activities into “culture, education, economics, and sports,” for which I am deeply grateful.

I hope that our customers will enjoy the culture of drinking black tea from Ceylon’s long history, and enjoy the richness of its connection with Japan and the world through our tea range at TEAKYO.
